Safety Before Anything Else

Smoke damage is the aftermath of a fire. It can be almost as dangerous as the actual fire itself, since there are plenty of harmful chemicals in the air. Smoke damage is certainly no fun to cleanup, but it’s absolutely essential. Smoke damage can quickly build up and stay trapped inside your walls and ceiling, so it’s imperative to quickly clean the damage. You should never hesitate to contact a professional fire damage restoration company in the event of a fire. You need to have the right equipment to safely handle the situation. You will need a large sponge, TSP cleaner, clean rags, heavy duty rubber cleaning gloves, safety goggles, 2 buckets, and warm water. Once you have all these essential smoke damage cleaning items, you are then ready to cleanup the mess.

The Cleanup Process

Smoke molecules can permeate nearly every part of your home, including, walls, floors, carpets, blinds and furniture. You need to carefully check your windows, walls, and carpeting before the cleanup process. Taking care of these three areas over the course of a smoke damage restoration is just as important as making sure that things like your clothing, bedding, furniture, and other personal possessions are cleaned. Here is a step-by-step guide to safely cleaning up the smoke damage that was left as a result of a fire:

  1. Fill the bucket with 1 gallon of warm water and add 1 generous tablespoon of TSP.
  2. Wearing rubber gloves and goggles, wet the sponge in the TSP solution. Working one section a time, wipe wall/ceiling vigorously with the sponge, then rinse thoroughly with a rag dipped in clean water. Continue until entire area has been washed and rinsed.
  3. You may have to repeat the wash/rinse several times, depending upon the severity of the soot buildup and charring. Be careful not to over saturate your walls, or let the water seep between your walls and baseboards, or you may cause damage to the drywall.
  4. If the smoke damage is not entirely removed by this process, you will most likely need to prime your walls/ceilings and repaint.
