What You Can Do Until Help Arrives

There are many ways a fire can begin and spread throughout your house. It could stem from an electrical outlet failure or from a lit cigarette that wasn’t extinguished properly. Fires can also occur from cooking, and they are more commonly known as grease fires. The most important thing should always be your safety. You should never attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire. Here are a few helpful tips you can do, before a professional fire damage technician arrives.

  • You can change furnace filter if blower is still operating. Dirty chimneys can cause chimney fires, which can eventually cause a tremendous amount of damage to your home.
  • Since the majority of fires occur in the kitchen, you can clean and protect chrome trim on kitchen appliances with a light coating of Vaseline. You should never attempt to put water on a grease fire, which can further expand the flames.
  • Pour non-toxic antifreeze in toilet bowls, sinks, and tubs to prevent freezing if the heat is off.
  • You should empty your refrigerator and freezer completely if the electricity is turned off, but keep the doors open.
  • You can wash any plants with water on both sides of the leaves.
  • Make sure to keep your windows open, to let out the ashes and soot.
  • You can also place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas. This will prevent the fire damage from entirely ruining your furniture or rugs.
